The IP rating is defined by IEC 60529 and expresses dust and water protection with two digits. The first digit covers ingress of solid foreign objects, the second covers ingress of water. It is the most direct indicator of whether a product can be used in a given environment.
What the digits mean
First digit (dust): 0 no protection / 1 objects larger than 50 mm excluded / 2 larger than 12.5 mm / 3 larger than 2.5 mm / 4 larger than 1 mm / 5 dust protected / 6 dust tight.
Second digit (water): 0 no protection / 1 vertical dripping / 2 dripping at 15 degrees / 3 spraying at 60 degrees / 4 splashing / 5 jetting / 6 powerful water jets / 7 immersion (specified depth and time) / 8 continuous immersion (conditions stated by the manufacturer) / 9 high-pressure high-temperature water jets.
Typical ratings for automotive applications
Electronic parts on an assembled vehicle: most require IP5K2 or IP6K7 (ISO 20653, which follows the IEC 60529 system with different notation).
Parts in exposed positions (sensors, external interfaces) commonly require IP6K9K.
Parts inside the engine bay have looser requirements but must tolerate high-temperature ageing.
IP6K9K is the highest rating, meaning dust tight plus resistance to high-pressure high-temperature water jets.
Test essentials
Dust test (IP5X / IP6X): talcum powder of the specified particle size, with vacuum extraction or blowing.
Water test (IPX3-IPX9): spraying, jetting or immersion at the specified flow rate and angle.
The sample must be assembled as it would be in the vehicle, including all seals and connectors.
After the test, functional testing and a seal check are needed to confirm that the protection actually works.
Common failures and design essentials
Insufficient seal compression → calculate the compression per specification, leaving margin for thermal expansion and permanent set.
Non-waterproof connector variants used → field-replaceable connectors are a weak point in protection.
Poorly placed lead-out → the sealing method where the cable exits the housing determines overall protection.
Assembly process control → cleanliness of the seal groove and the grease applied directly affect sealing performance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IP67 and IP6K9K?
The first digit is dust protection in both; the difference is the second digit. The 7 in IP67 means immersion testing (at a specified depth for a set time), while the 9 in IP6K9K means resistance to high-pressure high-temperature water jets (80 C water at 100 bar and 100 L/min). The latter is far more severe and is the current automotive standard for exposed parts.
Are other tests still needed after the IP test?
Usually yes. IP protection only verifies sealing, not reliability under temperature, vibration and corrosion. A complete validation plan usually combines ingress protection, high and low temperature, temperature cycling and vibration with shock.
Service notes
Our laboratory holds both CMA and CNAS accreditation, covers about 10,000 m2 and runs more than 500 sets of equipment. All testing is carried out in our own laboratories — nothing is subcontracted. Plant visits and on-site witnessed testing are welcome.
Scheduling follows the actual project pipeline. You can state your preferred lead time when you submit samples; we will confirm a feasible plan against current capacity and keep you updated at each milestone. Once the report is issued we send the electronic copy; corrective-action advice can be arranged separately.
